They did not place it in the Provost Guard room for the owner to claim. When asked they first denied it. Later, it was "found," minus the money. Both were arrested and tried by VII Corp Court Martial. Found Guilty. Confined at Fort Norfolk, VA for 6 months and fined $10 each month. When released, sent to Roanoke Island, NC to join Co. A. Married 15 Feb 1864 to a woman named Elizabeth at Roanoke Island, NC. Re-enlisted 24 Feb 64 at Roanoke Island, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville & Charleston, SC and probably Florence, SC. Paroled 10 Dec 64 at Charleston, SC. Arrived 17 Dec 64 at Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD. Admitted to the hospital on 19 Dec. On 25 Jan 65, William was released on a 30 day furlough. After arriving home, his family doctor reqesting extension twice, stating that William had Consumption and Chronic Diarreha and was unable to travel. Discharged 21 June 65. After the war he settled in Altoona, Blair Co., PA. He eventually moved from PA to Wayne Co., IN, where he became a grocer for the rest of his working years.
