While escaping, he was chased by guards with dogs. He hid in a swamp where he laid in water for 5 hours before proceeding towards Atlanta. He found a negro who was delivering a wagon load of bags of corn to Hood’s lines at Atlanta. George hid under the bags and arrived 8 Oct 64 to Sherman’s lines north of Atlanta. Transferred to Atlanta Exchange Barracks, and then to the hospital in Louisville, KY, where he was treated for rheumatism and debility. Then transferred to Washington, DC. Ordered 22 Dec 64 for 30 day furlough and then to return to the regiment. Arrived 6 Jan 65 at the hospital in Pittsburgh. Requested extension to furlough, since he was unable to preform duty due to rheumatism and debility. Discharged 25 Jan 65. Married Frances Erminia Evans. Another soldier stated that he died at Florence. In either case, he died in 1864 as a POW and lies in an unmarked grave; probably Andersonville.

FORD, Francis "Frank" - Private, Co. C. Born 1835 in Ireland. Immigrated in 1854. Enrolled 15 Nov 61 at age 21, a Laborer from Wayne Twp, Lawrence Co., PA. Mustered in 21 Nov 61. Wounded 31 May 61 at Fair Oaks, VA. While on the picket line, they were attacked and as the line fell back, Frank received a gunshot wound on the left side, with the minnieball coming out at his breast. Also received a buckshot wound on the right side of his head and ear and left thigh. He was left on the field during retreat. The CSA captured him but left him lying there. Three days later, he was saved by a "German" Union Regiment. Sent to White House, VA. Arrived 12 June 62 at New York City Park Barracks and sent to the Ladies Home Hospital. Then sent to Ft. Hamilton for 6 or 7 days and then returned to the 101st PA during July 62. Left Dec 62 in the hospital at Suffolk, VA. Discharged 2 April 63 due to wounds. Married Harriet E. who died in 1877. FOY, John S. - Private, Co. C. Born 22 March 1820 in PA, son of Matthew & Mary Anne (Van Fossen) Foy. Married Lovina Hazen. Enrolled 14 Feb 62 at Wampum, Lawrence Co., PA; a 42 year old Farmer from Wayne Twp, Lawrence Co., PA. Mustered in 1 March 62. Detached 18 Aug 62 as Brigade teamster. On 14 Dec 62, at the Battle of Kinston, NC, the 101st was chasing the enemy, and John injured his lower abdomen while jumping a ditch. Dr. Rush sent him to New Bern, NC, Foster Hospital for 6 weeks and then 3 weeks at New Bern Quartermaster Commissary. Left sick in the Stanley Hospital in New Bern when the 101st was ordered to Plymouth, NC. Arrived Sept 64 at Roanoke Island, NC. Discharged 18 May 65. After Lovina's death, John re-married to Eliza. Drafted at Meadville, Crawford Co., PA at age 33. Mustered in 30 May 64. Discharged 3 May 65. After Sophia's death, Gideon married about 1879 to Elizabeth and lived in Venango Co., PA. FREED, David - Private, Co. C. Born 24 April 1841 in Beaver Co., PA, son of Abraham & Mary Ann (Hall) Freed. Enrolled 2 Oct 61 at age 20 at Newport, Lawrence Co., PA, a Laborer from Big Beaver Twp, Lawrence Co., PA. Mustered in 19 Oct 61. Contracted measles while on night guard duty, became ill and unable to walk, and then deaf. Admitted Nov 61 to the hospital in Philadelphia and then in the hospital at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA for 3 months and Reading, PA for 9 months. Discharged 3 Sept 62 at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA. Enrolled 6 Sep 61 in the 101st at age 31, a Teacher from Irish Ripple, Lawrence Co., PA. Mustered in 22 Nov 61 as 2nd Lieut. Sick 28 Feb to 1 July 62 on board a hospital boat and then to the Protestant Union Infirmary Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Returned. Promoted 1 Nov 62 to 1st Lieut. and temporarily commanded Co. C. Promoted 1 Jan 63 to Captain. Left 28 Aug 63 on 20 day furlough. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Prisoner 11 months. Escaped 29 Nov 64 from Camp Asylum, Columbia, SC with Major Pasco, 16th CT Infantry & Capt. Freeman, 7th US Infantry. Traveled through swamps by night and slept during the day in wet clothes with no fire or shelter during cold weather. Captured on the west bank of a branch of the Edisto River near Midway, SC. Paroled 1 March 65 at N.E. Ferry, Wilmington, NC. Discharged 14 March 65. Married to Elizabeth E. Died 21 Aug 1893 at West Middlesex, Mercer Co., PA. Buried in Middlesex Cemetery.

FRICK, Abraham P. - Assistant Surgeon. Born 19 Aug 1835 at Neffsville, Manheim Twp, Lancaster Co., PA; the son of Jacob & Maria Heller (Pfautz) Frick. Served as Assistant Surgeon in either Ft. Steele or Ft. Laramie, Wyoming Territory. Married Phebe Mary Keturiah Smith on 19 March 1861. Enrolled 15 Sept 61 at Harrisburg, PA. Mustered in 15 Oct 61. Promoted 24 Nov 62 to Surgeon of the 103d PA Infantry. Abraham's wife was present with him at Plymouth, NC. When the fighting began at Plymouth on the 17th of April 64, she boarded the steamer Massasoit which took non-combatants to Roanoke Island, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Remained at Plymouth for 3 days after the surrender attending the wounded. Accompanied General Wessells and staff to Libby Prison, Richmond, VA. May also have been at Salisbury, NC. Paroled 30 April 64 at City Point, VA. Arrived 2 May 64 at Annapolis, MD. Ordered to return to regiment after 20 day furlough. Assigned for several weeks at Fort Monroe Chesapeake Hospital. Assigned 5 July 64 to duty as Surgeon-in-Chief, Sub-District Albemarle, Roanoke Island, North Carolina.  Assigned 4 June 65 to Raleigh, NC Post Hospital as Acting Staff Surgeon. Discharged 25 Jan 65. From 30 June 1876 to 8 Aug 1879 & March 1880 to June 1891 served the Dept. of the Platte as A.A.S. In 1890 living in Doña Ana Co., NM. Died 9 July 1913 in Aransas Pass, San Patricio County, TX. Mustered in 12 Nov 61. Re-enlisted 1 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA. Paroled 13 Dec 64 at Charleston, SC. Sent to Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD, arriving there 17 Dec 64. Furlough 26 Dec 64 for 30 days. Doctors requested extension of furlough. Returned 13 April 65. Ordered to Alexandria, VA and boarded the Massachusetts to make the journey. Drowned in the Potomac River 23 April 1865 by a collision with the Black Diamond.

FRIDAY, Solomon D. - Private, Co. H. Born 1844 in Franklin Twp, Beaver Co., PA, the son of Louis & Anna E. Friday. Married Margaret J. Enrolled 21 Oct 61 at age 18, a Carpenter from Wurtemburg, Lawrence Co., PA. Mustered in 12 Nov 61. Wounded in the left hand 31 May 62 at Fair Oaks, VA. Taken to Philadelphia on board the steamer Louisiana to be admitted to the hospital. Court Martial 21 July 63, Plymouth, NC: On 20 May 63, while on picket duty on Columbia Road, Solomon quit his post (along with William Cameron & John Horen), entered garden of  Dr. Norcom and took strawberries, Guilty, fined $13, hard labor with 12 lb. ball & chain for 15 days, confined at night. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 16 June 1864 of Pleurisy & Chronic Diarrhea at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 2099.

FRITZ, John Michael - Private, Co. I. Born 3 Aug 1845 in Friedensburg, Schuylkill Co., PA; the son of John & Susanna (Faust) Fritz. Enrolled 19 Sept 61 at Pittsburgh, PA; a 19 year old Farmer from Minersville, Schuylkill Co., PA. Mustered in 27 Dec 61. Wounded 31 May 62 in the left leg at Fair Oaks, VA. Arrived 7 June 62 at Fort Monroe, VA from White House, VA on the S. R. Spaulding. Admitted 8 June 62 to 22 & Wood Street hospital, Philadelphia. Discharged 19 Feb 63 on Surgeon's Certificate due to necrosis of tibia at Filbert Street Hospital, Philadelphia. Also served in Co. B, 14th Veteran Reserve Corps.
