GAYLORD, George G. - 2nd Lieutenant, Co. B. Born 1833 in Tioga Co., PA, the son of Alvin & Louisa (Copp) Gaylord. Enrolled 26 Sept 61 at age 28, a Mill Wright from Mansfield, Tioga Co., PA. Mustered in 24 Feb 62 as 2nd Lieut. Wounded by gunshot in the left hand 31 May 62 at the Battle of Fair Oaks, VA. After the battle and during the retreat, while crossing a bridge approaching Harrison's Landing, a cavalry unit crossed with them. Men were crowded off the bridge, some being killed by the fall and others injured. George fell off the bridge and landed on his right side causing a severe rupture. Arrived 3 June 62 at Philadelphia, PA on the ship Whilldin. Resigned 9 Aug 62 at Harrison's Landing, VA being unfit for duty. On 13 Dec 1877 George accidentally fell between two freight cars while riding from Elmira, NY. His right leg was entiely crushed and he died within a few minutes. Died in Mansfield, Tioga Co., PA. Commissioned and Mustered in 24 Feb 62. On 9 Aug 62 he requested a 20 or 30 day furlough due to general prostration. Resigned 28 Aug 62, when called to pastorate of the United Presbyterian Church in New Brighton, Beaver Co., PA, where he served till 1867. Appointed Pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Wurtemburg, Lawrence Co., PA on 1 Nov 1874. Died 4 Feb 1883 in Great Bend, Kansas.

Camp Hamilton, Suffolk, VA Court Martial 13 Oct 62: On 2 Sept 62 he refused to wear a neck stock during Regimental drill. When ordered to wear his neck stock, he drew his bayonet, threw down his rifle and ran away. He stated he had a lump on neck and couldn't wear it. He had gone to the Surgeon but he was out. Found Guilty - 1 month hard labor. During Nov 62 he and Private John Rutter were sent to the hospital at Suffolk, VA. They both were then transferred to the hospital near Hampton, VA. Private Rutter was discharged 12 Jan & Samuel on 14 Jan 63 on Surgeon's Certificate at Fortress Monroe, VA. They travelled to Pittsburgh together, with Samuel helping John who was almost too weak to travel. Died 4 June 1896 and is buried in Union Dale Cemetery, Allegheny Co., PA. Section B, Lot 38.

Discharged 17 Nov 64. Married 28 May 67 to Frances Florence Young. Supposedly died 5 June 1871 and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. Section 5, Lot 20. Discharged 28 May 63 at New Bern, NC due to an old injury that he received in Mexico in his left foot causing paralysis and stiffness to ankle. Died 16 Sept 1863 and is buried in Union Dale Cemetery, Allegheny Co., PA.

Mustered in 19 Nov 61. On 1 June 62, after the Battle of Fair Oaks, while building a corduroy road. he contracted a fever. Married 7 Aug 1873 to Mary Moffit at Harmony, Butler Co., PA. Member A. M. Harper Post No. 181, GAR. Name appears on Post GAR monument in Braddock Cemetery, Allegheny Co., PA. Died 28 July 1898 and is buried in Braddock Cemetery.

GRAHAM, William - Private, Co. C. Enrolled 1 Sept 63. Discharged 30 April 64. Identity with the 101st needs to be confirmed. He doesn't appear on muster rolls, but does appear in 1890 Veteran's Census living in Pittsburgh, PA. Possibly the same as William J. Graham.

GREEN, John B. - Private, Co. E. Married 17 May 1855 to Maria Clarissa Ballard in Detroit, MI. Enrolled 2 Dec 61 at age 42, an Engineer from Allegheny Co., PA. Mustered in 19 Dec 61. John received a gun shot wound 30 May 62 and died the next day from effects of his wounds on 31 May 1862 at Fair Oaks, VA. James A. Mercer states that he died 1 June 1864 on the Fair Oaks battlefield; being shot the previous day.

GRIFFEE, James - Private, Co. A. Born about 1812 in Cumberland Co., PA. Married Mary. First served in Co. F, 165th PA Infantry. Enrolled & mustered into the 101st PA on 23 March 64 at Carlisle, PA; a 40 year old Laborer from Tyrone, PA. Had Chicken Pox 12 May until 12 June 64 at Roanoke Island, NC. On Aug 64 James lifted a log and ruptered his side and was sent to the Regimental hospital about 1 month. Discharged 8 June 65 on Surgeon's Certificate. Died 25 Dec 1901. Buried in Salem United Methodist Cemetery, Gettysburg, PA. Headstone marked as GRIFFY.

GRIFFIN, James L. - Private, Co. B. Born about 1840 in Venango Co., PA, son of Isaac & Elanor Griffin. First served in Co. L, 143d PA. Later was drafted into the 101st at age 24. Mustered in 30 May 64 at Meadville, PA. Discharged 3 May 65. Died 20 June 1893 in Sterrettania, Erie Co., PA, while on leave from the Soldier's Home. Buried in the Soldier's Home Cemetery, Erie, PA.

Taken to Hygeia General Hospital, VA from White House, VA arriving onboard the Kennebec. Discharged 10 Feb 63 on Surgeon's Certificate at David's Island Hospital, New York City. Died 9 June 1888 from Lung Disease.
