LONGENECKER, Jacob H. - Adjutant, Co. D. Born 17 Sept 1839 near Martinsburg, Huston Twp, Blair Co., PA; the son of John & Elizabeth (Holsinger) Longenecker. Enrolled 9 Oct 61 at age 22, a Teacher from Woodbury, Bedford Co., PA. Mustered in as Private. Promoted 20 Jan 62 to Sergeant Major of the Regiment. After the Battle of Fair Oaks, VA was transported aboard the steamship S. R. Spaulding to Bellevue Hospital, New York City from Fortress Monroe, VA. Commissioned 1 May 1863 as 2nd Lieutenant of Co. D and later promoted to Adjutant. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Macon & Savannah, GA (Squad 6) and Charleston & Camp Asylum, Columbia, SC, Charlotte and Salisbury, NC. Escaped from prison in Charlotte, but was recaptured. Paroled 2 March 65 at N.E. Ferry, Wilmington, NC. Discharged 14 March 65. Judge in Bedford, PA after the war. He married Nannie Rebecca Russell. He was a member of the William Watson Post, GAR and the Loyal Legion. During 1885 & 1886 he served as President of the National Association of Ex-Union Prisoners of War. Died 23 Sept 1916 in Bedford Co., PA. Buried in Bedford Cemetery. Quite a bit of further info available.
