Specification. that he, having been regularly posted as a sentinel, did leave his post before he was regularly relieved. This at Conaby Redoubt, near Plymouth, NC, at or near 12 o’clock on the night of the 5th of February 1864. To which charge and specification the accused pleaded as follows: Not Guilty. The Court finds the accused, as follows: Not Guilty. The record was returned to the Court by the Commanding General for reconsider­ation, with the following endorsement: because of the irregularity of this mode of guard duty and of the danger of a precedent. A sentinel has no business to leave his post, and he must call for some authorized person to come and relieve him or to procure his things that are necessary. The Court, after due reconsideration, and the instructions from the Commanding Officer, find the accused, Guilty. And the Court do therefore sentence him, to be confined at hard labor for two months at Fort Williams; testimony stated that Pvt. Walker was posted on the traverse in front of the guns, went to his quarters, about 40 feet away, for his overcoat. Capt. WILSON, Joseph Hemphill - Colonel. Born 16 May 1820 in North Sewickley Township (now Franklin), Beaver Co., PA; son of Thomas and Agnes (Hemphill) Wilson. He graduated Jefferson College in Canonsburg, PA. Admitted to the bar on 5 June 1850. For three years was the District Attorney of Beaver County. He was elected as a member of the PA House of Representatives from 1856 to 1861. Enrolled at age 41, assuming command of the 101st PA on 17 Sept 61. Mustered in 4 Oct 61. Commanded the regiment at Yorktown & Williamsburg, VA. Died 30 May 1862 of Typhoid fever near Roper's Church, VA. Enrolled 11 Jan 62 at age 21, a Farmer from Centre Twp, Perry Co., PA. Mustered in 13 Jan 62. Wounded 31 May 62 at Fair Oaks, VA. Discharged 1 March 63 due to wounds received at Fair Oaks. On 2 Jan 64 he was mustered into Co. I, 17th PA Cavalry and was later wounded near Cold Harbor, VA. As soon as he recovered from those wounds, he was wounded again at White House Landing, VA. He was eventually discharged 7 Aug 65 at Louisville, KY. Married 26 Oct 65 to Jennie Mehaffie. After the war, he worked for many years with the PA Railroad Co. and served on the Board of the White Hall Soldier's Orphans' Home.
