WHETSEL, Martin Van Buren - Private, Co. F. Born February 13, 1837 in Fayette County, PA, son of  Daniel E. and Susan (Jordan) Whetsel, the 6th of 10 children. May 23, 1858, he married Hannah McCollister, daughter of  Samuel and Mary Lewis McCollister. Hannah was the sister of James McCollister, also in the 101st. Prior to his enlistment, he was a carpenter and cabinet maker, a trade taught to him by his father. He also made caskets for his brother who was an undertaker. At least one of the homes he built is still standing and occupied by one of his grand-daughters. Enlisted 8 March `65 at Pittsburgh, PA; a 28 year old Farmer from Perry Twp, Fayette Co., PA. Mustered in 9 March `65. Mustered out 25 June `65 with defective hearing. Hannah was pregnant with their third child. She and the baby, Hannah J., died in childbirth, July 23, 1865, one month after his discharge. In 1867, he married Elma Jane Hixenbaugh, daughter of James and Mary Elliott Hixenbaugh, with whom he had 4 more children. Additionally, he helped to raise George A. Whetzel, a first cousin's son. Member of Fayette County Veteran's Association. He served as local school director for 16 years and a Justice of the Peace for 20 years before his death, September 17, 1917. His obituary stated that he was "one of the staunchest democrats of Fayette County."  Buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Upper Middletown, Fayette Co., PA.
