While escaping, he was chased by guards with dogs. He hid in a swamp where he laid in water for 5 hours before proceeding towards Atlanta. He found a negro who was delivering a wagon load of bags of corn to Hood’s lines at Atlanta. George hid under the bags and arrived 8 Oct 64 to Sherman’s lines north of Atlanta. Transferred to Atlanta Exchange Barracks, and then to the hospital in Louisville, KY, where he was treated for rheumatism and debility. Then transferred to Washington, DC. Ordered 22 Dec 64 for 30 day furlough and then to return to the regiment. Arrived 6 Jan 65 at the hospital in Pittsburgh. Requested extension to furlough, since he was unable to preform duty due to rheumatism and debility. Discharged 25 Jan 65. Married Frances Erminia Evans. Wounded 31 May 61 at Fair Oaks, VA. While on the picket line, they were attacked and as the line fell back, Frank received a gunshot wound on the left side, with the minnieball coming out at his breast. Also received a buckshot wound on the right side of his head and ear and left thigh. He was left on the field during retreat. The CSA captured him but left him lying there. Three days later, he was saved by a "German" Union Regiment. Sent to White House, VA. Arrived 12 June 62 at New York City Park Barracks and sent to the Ladies Home Hospital. Then sent to Ft. Hamilton for 6 or 7 days and then returned to the 101st PA during July 62. Left Dec 62 in the hospital at Suffolk, VA. Discharged 2 April 63 due to wounds. Married Harriet E. who died in 1877. On 14 Dec 62, at the Battle of Kinston, NC, the 101st was chasing the enemy, and John injured his lower abdomen while jumping a ditch. Dr. Rush sent him to New Bern, NC, Foster Hospital for 6 weeks and then 3 weeks at New Bern Quartermaster Commissary. Left sick in the Stanley Hospital in New Bern when the 101st was ordered to Plymouth, NC. Arrived Sept 64 at Roanoke Island, NC. Discharged 18 May 65. After Lovina's death, John re-married to Eliza. (Tennis) Smith at Union M.E. Church, Philadelphia, PA. Enrolled in the 101st PA at Lancaster, PA. Age 26, brown hair & eyes, 5’7”, Physician. Mustered 15 Oct 61 as Asst. Surgeon at Harrisburg, PA. Promoted 24 Nov 62 to Surgeon and transferred to the 103rd PA. On 14 Dec 63 at Maxwell Hospital, Plymouth, NC, Pvt. C. Tensmayer, Co.
