HOARD, Joseph Seth - Lieutenant Colonel, Co. A. Born 17 April 1818 in Augusta, Oneida Co. (now Stockbridge, Madison Co.), New York, son of Enos & Fanny (Perry) Hoard. Attended the Stockbridge Acadamy. Widely known as the Traveling Agent of the NY Lock Company and was the inventor of the Hoard & Spencer Burglar-Proof Door Lock. Married 21 Jan 1841 to Laura M. Robbins. Relocated in 1844 to Mansfield, Tioga Co., PA. In 1855 he helped build the Mansfield Iron Works. He also originated and founded the Mansfield Classical Seminary (State Normal School). In June 1861, he raised a company of 100 men and was commissioned as Captain, Co. B, 11th PA. Transferred to the 101st PA, enrolling 4 Oct 61 at age 43. Commissioned and Mustered in 4 Jan 62 as Major. Mistakenly reported as killed at the Battle of Seven Pines, VA. Promoted 21 July 62 to Lieut. Colonel. Resigned 24 Sept 62 due to ill health. After the war he lived briefly in Tarrytown, NY engaged in merchandising. In 1863 he relocated to Vineland, NJ; doing business there until 1868 when he moved to Chicago, IL and engaged in the real estate business and money lending. In Jan 1871 he moved to Red Wing, MN and established the Minnesota Loan Agency and Goodhue County Savings Bank. in 1873 built a residence in Winona, MN, but it never bacame his permanent residence. In Jan 1878 he established the Goodhue County Bank. In 1879 he and his son Enos formed the J.S. Hoard & Son firm dealing in real estate and loans. Besides his banking endeavors, he aided largely in building up the city of Red Wing. He also owned a beautiful farm near the city called "Idlewild." HURLEY, Alexander B. - Private, Co. I. Born 3 Dec 1822 in Cumberland Co., PA. Married Sarah H. Miller in 1846. Enrolled 2 Jan 62 at age 37, a Carpenter from Harrisburg, PA. Sick with Pneumonia in a Harrisburg Hospital during Jan 62. Continued illness after muster and sent home 22 Feb 62 on furlough. He stated he was too sick to return but was marked as a Dedserter. Returned 23 Feb 64 and was forwarded to the regiment at Roanoke Island, NC. Captain Clark, Commanding, assigned him duty and requested his superiors that Alexander be returned to duty without trial. Alexander claimed he loss sight in my his eye from an exploding percussion cap when firing his rifle during a funeral for a comrade on 15 Sept 64 at Roanoke Island. Officially returned to active duty 14 June 65 at Camp Palmer, New Bern, NC; without pay and allowances occurred during his absence. Mustered out 25 June 65. Died 16 Oct 1901 at age 81 and is buried in Bethel Church / Doubling Gap Church of God Cemetery, Newville, Cumberland Co., PA. Name also listed as HORLEY.
