On 8 Dec 62, while enroute from Suffolk, VA to New Bern, NC, another person ran into Thomas while coming on deck of a transport ship. Thomas fell 16 feet down a hatch. He broke 3 ribs, fractured his left arm and dislocated his wrist. Taken to Foster Hospital, New Bern, NC. Transferred 13 Jan 63 to the Academy Hospital. Discharged 7 April 62 due to the effects of smallpox contracted while on duty at Camp Curtin and effects of his fractured arm and dislocated wrist. Living in Ogle, Butler Co., PA in 1890. Died 19 July 1898.

In 1865, after the death of Charles, widow Mary took on a boarder; a local politician & Election Officer named Thomas Wilson, former Sergeant, Co. E, 19th PA Cavalry. He had a wife and children living in a different household. Many rumors were speculated about their relationship in her pension file. It was thought that fraud was taking place to receive the pension since it was reported that she was married to Thomas Wilson. Both Mary and Thomas vehemently denied that they were married and he was simply a boarder. In 1894 she was dropped from the pension rolls due to her "notorious adulterous cohabitation" with Thomas. She died 6 Dec 1911, as Mary E. Wilson, widow of Thomas Wilson. Pension file is an interesting read.

RUTAN, James Smith - 1st Lieutenant, Co. F. Born 29 May 1838 in Carroll Co., OH, the son of Alexander Aikman & Sarah (Workman) Rutan. Attended Richmond College in OH, and the Beaver Academy, at Beaver, PA. He then taught school for a year, and then began to prepare himself for the profession of the law, prosecuting his studies under Richard P. Roberts, who later, as a Colonel of the 140th PA, was killed at Gettysburg. Being admitted to the bar, he commenced the practice of law at Beaver. Enrolled 13 Oct 61 at age 23, a Lawyer from Beaver, Beaver Co., PA. Mustered in 9 Nov 61. Contracted chronic diarreha and malaria at the Battle of Fair Oaks. Treated at Yorktown, VA and Washington, DC. Discharged by request due to ill health 18 July 62 at Harrison's Landing, VA. Elected District Attorney of Beaver Co., serving 6 years. Married Eliza (Cora) MCNeely Cox on 2 May 1865. In 1868 he was selected by the Electoral College of Pennsylvania as their Messenger, or Bearer of their returns to the National Capital. In 1869, he was elected to the Senate of Pennsylvania from the Twenty-sixth District, consisting of the counties of Beaver, Butler, and Washington, and was re-elected, in 1872, by a largely increased majority. He was twice Chairman of the Committee on Congressional Apportionment, and was Speaker of the Senate during the session of 1872. He has also served as a member of the Committees on Federal Relations, Finance, Railroads, and others of an important character. During the session of 1874, he served as Chairman of the Committee on Apportionment. He had a controlling interest and was the principal of the Beaver Radical, and was a Director of the Beaver National Bank. Died 18 June 1892 in Allegheny Co., PA.
