He was run over and broke his left leg and left shoulder. Someone put him on the side of the road and the next morning was sent to Harrison’s Landing Hospital, then to Philadelphia. BILLINGSLEY, Amos Stevens - Chaplain. Born 14 Nov 1818 near East Palestine, Columbiana Co., OH, the son of Robert & Jemima (Austin) Billingsley. He graduated from Jefferson College, PA in 1847. Ordained 10 Jan 1854 as a Presbyterian Minister. He served as Pastor until Dec 1857 in the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church near Ellwood City, Lawrence Co., PA. Mr. Billingsley was sent West by the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. In 1858, he was the first pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Brownville, Nemaha Co., Nebraska Territory. Spent 1861-62 as a missionary in the Colorado Gold Fields. Assigned 21 Dec 63 as Chaplain of the 101st PA and mustered in 9 Jan 64. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. After the surrender, Rev, Billingsley requested permission from Gen. Hoke to, and did, minister to the wounded. Held captive at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA. Exchanged at City Point, VA. Arrived 2 May 64 at Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD. On Detached Service at Fortress Monroe, VA during June 64. Appointed Hospital Chaplain at Fortress Monroe VA on 13 Feb 65. Absent on detached service when the 101st PA was mustered out. Officially mustered out Aug 1865. Married Emily Hamilton on 26 Sept 1865. Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Iberia, OH.  In 1865 he & Emily settled in Statesville, NC where he established and was pastor of the colored Presbyterian Church. BRENIZER, LaFayette - Corporal, Co. K. Born 4 Aug 1835 in PA. He married Elizabeth Plank 22 March 1855 near Gettysburg, PA. Enlisted 21 Sept 61 at Gettysburg, PA at age 26, a Carpenter from Arendtsville, Adams Co., PA. Mustered in 5 Nov 61. From Sept 62 to Feb 63 he was acting division Quarter Master.  He became sick at Suffolk, VA and was discharged 3 March 63 as a Corporal. Enlisted again 1 Feb 64 in Chambersburg, PA as a Private in Co. B, 21st PA Cavalry. On 18 June 64 he was shot in the left side of his neck during a Cavalry charge on some fortifications at Petersburg, VA. He was sent to City Point, VA where he was then shipped to Delaup general hospital on Davids Island, NY. From there he was sent to Citizens Hospital, Philadelphia, PA to recuperate. Went back to his unit 23 Aug 64. Then on 5 April 65, he received a saber cut across his face during a cavalry engagement at Amelia Springs, VA. He was mustered out as a 1st Sgt on 8 July 65 at Lynchburg, VA. Moved to Abingdon, VA in the 1880's and his widow was living in Knoxville, TN when she died 28 Dec 1927. BRETZ, George Zigler - Assistant Surgeon. Born 5 March 1825 in Dauphin Co., PA, the son of Jacob & Mary Ann (Boyer) Bretz. Graduated 1851 from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, MD. Returned to Carlisle, PA to work as a Surgeon Dentist. Married 23 April 1856 to Catherine "Kate," daughter of Dr. Morris Reynolds at Brooklyn, NY who died in 1860. He became a student at the Long Island Medical School. Commissioned 4 Aug 62 as Assistant Surgeon at Carlisle, PA. Acting Post Surgeon at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at the Post Hospital, Plymouth, NC. Surgeon, George Bretz, 101st PA; Assistant Surgeon, Nehemiah Nickerson, 16th CT; acting Assistant Post Surgeon, Ashley W. Barrows, 27th MA; and Margaret Leonard, who served as a Hospital Matron, remained at Plymouth and cared for the sick & wounded. When 22 of the patients were well enough to travel, they went to General Hospital No. 7 (Fair Grounds Hospital) in Raleigh, NC, arriving there 19 May 64. From there they were sent to Andersonville. Surgeon Bretz & Assistant Surgeon Nickerson were left as POWs at Macon, GA. Acting Assistant Surgeon Barrows and Margaret Leonard continued on to Andersonville, GA. Bretz was transferred to Savannah, GA and then sent to Charleston, SC for parole on 23 Sept 64. At 7 am, Bretz, along with Surgeon W. McPherson, 101st PA & Assistant Surgeon Nickerson, 16th CT, boarded the Celt at Chisme Wharf on the Ashley River and met up with the steamer Delaware that would take them to Hilton Head, SC. Commissioned as Surgeon on 20 June 65 but not mustered in as such. Mustered out 25 June 65 at New Bern, NC. Commissioned 24 July 65 as Assistant Surgeon of the 7th PA Cavalry. Mustered out 23 Aug 65. Returned to Brooklyn after the war and worked as a Dentist & Physician and served as a Professor at Long Island College Hospital. He was a prominent Mason of St. John's Lodge No. 260, Carlisle, PA. Died 4 Dec 1909 of accidental asphyxiation at 171 Court St., Brooklyn, New York. Buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY.

BROWN, George L. - 1st Lieutenant, Co. I. Born 6 Dec 1838 at Milton, PA. Enlisted as a Private in Co. I on 14 Sept 61 at age 23, a Clerk from Northumberland Co., PA. Mustered in 3 Jan 62. Promoted to 2nd Lieut. on 1 Jan 62. After the Battle of Fair Oaks, VA was transported aboard the steamship S. R. Spaulding to Bellevue Hospital, New York City from Fortress Monroe, VA. Commissioned 1st Lieut. on 1 March 63. Wounded in the left breast & arm by minnie ball and captured 20 April 64 at Fort Compher, Plymouth, NC. Sent to field hospital of the 8th NC. The following day was sent to the hospital at Plymouth. Due to wounds, was kept at Plymouth until able to travel. Sent 6 May 64 to Weldon, NC. On 17 May he was sent to the hospital at Macon, GA. Then a POW at Charleston City Jail yard and the Old Marine Hospital at Charleston, SC; Camp Asylum, Columbia, SC; Charlotte, Raleigh and Goldsboro, NC. Escaped 4 times & recaptured twice by bloodhounds. One of his escapes was on 3 Nov 64 from Camp Sorghum at Columbia, SC. He was out 17 days before being recaptured in east TN. Paroled for exchange 1 March 65. Arrived 6 March 65 at Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD. Mustered out 15 Mar 65 at Washington, DC. Married Rachel J. Moore on 1 May 1866.
