Mother Mary died 28 Dec 1877. Her daughter Margaret impersonated her by signing the pension checks after Mary died and continued to do so until 4 May 1898. Another daughter, Ellen, wife of Walter Casey, and her son Eugene, assisted in the fraud. Margaret was illiterate and signed her "x" and sister Ellen was serving as the witness and at times would ask her son to witness the mark, although he had no clue there was fraud taking place. Margaret was not arrested due to the fact she was an invalid and confined to her bed with inflammatory rheumatism. Mrs. Casey and her son Eugene were arrested and bail was set at $1,000. Awaiting trial, Mrs. Casey had a stroke of paralysis and was unable to attend court. Her son Eugene became "temporarily insane" and was admitted to the Blockley Almshouse (Philadelphia Hospital) Asylum. Eugene was eventually cleared of the charges, and his sanity returned and was released. The sisters defrauded the government of $2542 over 20 years. Because the sisters didn't have the means to repay the government and due to their ill health, it appears they were never imprisoned or forced to repay the money. They were still pursuing legal options when Ellen Casey died 18 July 1902. Eugene Casey eventually became a Police Officer in Philadelphia. Also borne as McCARTY. Pension file is an interesting read.

After capture, he was brought inside the breastworks and put in a tent for about a week; being attended by CSA Surgeon. Taken to the hospital in Augusta, GA. Two weeks later, he was moved to the jail to make way for CSA wounded in the hospital. After one week in the jail, he was taken to Andersonville, GA. There is some confusion as to what happens to Alexander at this point. One account states that he was taken to Florence, SC. Enrolled 28 Feb 65, while a POW in Florence, in the CSA under Colonel O'Neil. Escaped 7 May 65 from the CSA at Savannah, GA. In Alexander's account, he states that after arriving at Andersonville, he was only there one week and was transferred to Millen, GA and then to "Charleston" [Probably Blackshear, GA] for a week, and then to Thomasville, GA for 2 weeks. Left Thomasville in a cattle car, enroute to Andersonville. Escaped from the car. Fed by slaves, and reached Savannah, GA in the later part of April 1865. In either case, he shows up as "escaped" in Savannah, GA somewhere between late April & 7 May 65. Taken to Annapolis, MD and then to Harrisburg, PA. Discharged 10 June 65 to date 23 May 65. Married 5 Oct 1877 to Martha, whose first husband was killed while working on the railroad. Died 14 Dec 1907 & is buried in section H, Union Dale Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.
